Dafne (1597) by Jacopo Peri is commonly regarded as the first opera and Claudio Monteverdi
(1567-1643) the first great opera composer. Handel, Mozart, Rossini, Donizetti and Bellini
followed and, from the golden age (19th to 20th century) there was Wagner, Verdi, Puccini
and Strauss. We hold images of all the great opera composers, conductors and singers.
