Before the 17th century composition was confined mainly to sacred works and, in the secular sphere, to madrigals and canzonets. Palestrina was the first composer of polyphonic music but Monteverdi, Purcell and Lille were the stars of the 17th century. In the 18th century, known as the golden age, Germany produced six of the worlds most famous musicians J.S. Bach, Handel, Gluck, Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. The 19th century is represented by Schubert, Wagner, Mahler, Bruckner, Berlioz, Chopin, Liszt, Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn and in the 20th century composers of note included Delius, Ravel, Bartok, Elgar, Walton, Shostakovich, Stravinsky, Britten, Tippett, Bliss and Schoenberg. Aside from the composers our archive includes the finest conductors, instrumentalist, orchestras and ensembles past and present. We are continually adding to our collection so, if you cannot find the right image, contact us – it may be on its way.
