Laurence Olivier – (1907 –1989) Celebrating the life of a star A series of special events are planned during August and September on London's South Bank to celebrate the centenary of the birth, of one of the greatest actors of the 20th century. Laurence Olivier played more than 120 stage roles, including: Macbeth, Romeo, Hamlet, Othello, Uncle Vanya, and Archie Rice in The Entertainer. He also starred in over fifty films, including William Wyler's Wuthering Heights and Alfred Hitchcock's Rebecca. The National Theatre - Olivier was the director from 1963 to 1973 - will project a series of his classic films on to the theatre's tower while BFI Southbank will screen a two-part season of his films and we have put together a selection of images to celebrate more than six decades of his greatest performances. |
