Inga Nielsen, one of Denmark's best known sopranos, died on February 10th. A child prodigy who started her recording career at the tender age of 9 she became a highly regarded and much admired presence on the international opera stage. Initially making her reputation in Mozartian roles she then moved to embrace a heavier repertoire - Salome and Chrysothemis in Strauss's Elektra, the unnamed protagonist in Schoenberg's Erwartung, and Elsa in Lohengrin. Her performances, known for their emotional veracity, impressed audiences and critics alike and her Strauss's Salome was widely considered to be a definitive performance. In 1992, Inga Nielsen was honoured by the Queen of Denmark with the title of "Ridderkorset," equivalent of the English "Dame.

What a night at the opera! Due to a bout of bronchitis the ENO had already drafted in an understudy in case Anna Cristy, the leading lady of Lucia Di Lammermoor, was not able to perform. What had not been anticipated was Clive Bayley, playing the pastor Raimondo, falling ill mid performance with a chest infection! As luck would have it bass-baritone Paul Whelan, due to play the part next month, was in the audience and stepped in to save the day. He took the role and sang from the side of the stage whilst Mr. Bayley mimed his way through the rest of the performance.
Anna Cristy, Clive Bayley and Paul Whelan with the rest of the cast delivered a memorable performance. The audience were ecstatic, the critics delighted and our photographer was there to cover the saving of the day! A spokesman for the English National Opera said: "It was an electric evening all round”.
